Setting Up Sage 50 Pro ODBC Data Connection

DBX supports various data sources and that includes ODBC complian data databases such as a Sage 50 Pro Accounting database.  Let us see how this can be setup.

All steps below require that Sage 50 is running with the correct database open.

Required Sage 50 Setup

  1. Make sure that the user login which will be used to connect to the database has the proper permissions.  In Sage 50 application, go to Setup | Set up Users and modify the settings for the user.

  2. Make sure that the password for the user is no more than 8 characters

Test Sage 50 Database Connection

  1. With the Sage 50 application running, open the ODBC 32 Data Source Administrator in Control Panel.
  2. Verify that you can see the MySQL ODBC 3.51 driver or ODBC 5.1 driver

  3. Go to the “User DSN” tab and configure your database.  In this example, we will look at a demo database named “simply”.  This step will prove if you are able to connect to the database properly.

  4. Take note of the database name, and port number.

Create DBX Connection for Sage 50

  1. In DBX, go to Options | Connection Manager.
  2. Create a new ODBC Connection using the following connection string templateDriver={MySQL ODBC 3.51 Driver};Server=myServerAddress;Port=3306;
    Database=myDataBase;User=myUsername;Password=myPassword;Option=3;

  3. Use the following connection string if you have MySQL ODBC driver 5.1
    Driver={MySQL ODBC 5.1 Driver};Server=myServerAddress;Port=3306;
    Database=myDataBase;User=myUsername;Password=myPassword;Option=3;

Test DBX ODBC Connection

  1. In DBX, go to Options | SQL Query Tester
  2. Select the ODBC connection created for Sage from the Database To Query drop down.
  3. Enter   select * from tAccount in the query text box
  4. Click on Refresh Displayed Records – it should display account records from Sage.
